The climate is semi-arid with rainfall in winter and summer month, very little rain, offering a rich centre of diversity of succulent plants.

The Klein Karoo is traditionally hot and dry, with cooling southwesterly winds during the summer months.

Very little rain occurs during summer, and if it does, it is usually in the form of thunderstorms.

Normally the area receives about 250mm of rain per year and because it receives most of its rainfall during winter it has a Mediterranean climate. It receives the lowest rainfall (6mm) in January and the highest (27mm) in August. The region is the coldest during July/August when the mercury drops to -2 degrees C on average during the night but during the day the temperatures are very comfortable.
